FACTS ABOUT STORMS
Lightning and Thunder
---------------------------------------------------
The average lightning stroke is 6 miles long.
The average thunderstorm is 6-10 miles wide.
The average thunderstorm moves at 25 MPH.
Thunder can be heard over a distance of 3-4
miles, depending on humidity and terrain. 100,000 thunderstorms occur in the US per year. About 10%  produce high winds, flash floods and tornados.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tornadoes
The fastest tornado traveled 286 MPH and was recorded in Wichita Falls, TX  4/2/58
Three out of four world tornadoes hit the US.
In 1919 a tornado traveled 293 miles on the ground from Missouri to Indiana.  Only 2% of UStornadoes are "violent" in intensity, but they produce 70% of tornado deaths.  Winds in these "violent" tornadoes equal 200 MPH and can stay on the ground for an hour or more.
Hurricanes
HURRICANE CATEGORY NUMBERS INDICATE WIND SPEED AND POTENTIAL DAMAGE

CATEGORY I (74-96 MPH)
Minimal Damage primarily to shrubbery, trees, foliage, and unanchored homes. Inundates low lying coastal roads, no real structural damage.

CATEGORY II (97-111 MPH)
Moderate damage to shrubbery and trees. Major damage to exposed mobile homes. Extensive damage to poorly constructed signs.  No major damage to buildings. Coast roads and low lying access roads flooded. Considerable damage to piers, marinas, small craft. Evaculation of some shoreline residences and low-lying areas required.

CATEGORY III (112-131 MPH)
Extensive damage to foliae, signs, large trees. Structural damage to small buildings. Mobile homes destroyed. Serious flooding of coastal areas, low-lying escape routes. Flat terrain 5 feet above sea level flooded inland 8 miles or more. Evacuation of low-lying residences within severeal blocks of shoreline possibly required.

CATEGORY IV (132-155 MPH)
Extreme damage to shrubs and trees, roofing materials, windows and doors. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Flat terrain 10 feet or less above sea level flooded inland as far as 6 miles. Major damage to lower floors of structures near shore due to flooding and battering by waves and floating debris. Major erosion of beaches. Massive evacuation of all residences within 500 yards of shore possibly required and single-story residences within 2 miles of shore.

CATEGORY V (156+ MPH)
Catastrophic damage. Shrubs, trees, roofs of buildings down, some complete building failures, small buildings overturned or blown away. Coimplete destruction of mobile homes.  Major damage to lower floors of all structures less than 15 feet above sea level within 500 years of shore. Massive evaluation of residential areas on low ground within 5 to 10 miles of shore possible required.
